French 75
The popular story of the provenance of the French 75 is that British soldiers stationed in France during the First World War put together the key ingredients at their disposal – London gin from home and the local champagne – to create a punchy drink, which they named after the iconic French M1897 75mm artillery gun.
Recipe
- 1 1⁄2 oz / 37.5 ml gin
- 1⁄2 oz / 12.5 ml lemon juice
- 1⁄4 oz / 6 ml sugar syrup
- Champagne
Shake the first three ingredients with ice. Pour into a champagne flute and top up slowly with champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist.
