Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine

This traditional winter drink – mulled wine – has made something of a comeback of late, turning up at more Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night, Thanksgiving and Christmas parties than ever before. The mulling of wine goes back as far as Roman times, when the first known instances of wine being heated and spiced were recorded.

Recipe

  • 26.4 oz (750 ml) bottle of red wine
  • 2 oz / 50 ml sloe gin
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 12 cloves
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 large piece orange rind
  • 1 large piece lemon rind
  • 3 oz / 75 ml honey

Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat gently for no more than 10 minutes before serving in heatproof glasses.
